Information for Parents
If you are concerned about your son or daughter’s school performance because of a known or unknown disability, please contact the classroom teacher and then we will work together on the following steps:
1. Teachers will try two to three strategies with a measurable outcome on their own. They will obtain baseline data, keep collecting data and document this in the district’s achievement team data files. Try for six to eight weeks. Begin communication with parents about your concern.
2. After the strategy is implemented, if there is still a concern, the teacher will ask a colleague for more strategies. This may include special education staff, general education staff, administrator and parents. The teacher will keep collecting data and document this in district’s achievement data files. They will try for six to eight weeks.
3. If the strategies have been implemented and there are still concerns. The teacher will provide documentation of rate of student growth to the principal. The principal will notify Thurston special education team and the team will schedule an achievement team meeting.
4. The next steps will be discussed at the meeting. Possibilities for next steps will be more precise strategies with direct help from the team, creating a 504 plan or creating an evaluation plan to see if the student is eligible for special education.
